Not Totally Pointless: Three Takeaways from Austin FC’s First Two Matches of 2024

Defying the expectations of sane, rational MLS fans everywhere, Austin FC grabbed a point on the road against the vaunted Seattle Sounders on Saturday night. Was it pretty? Absolutely not, but a point is a point is a point. And after the previous Saturday’s blunders against Minnesota United, it’s a point that most of a Verde persuasion will be pleased with. So that’s two matches played and one point for Austin FC.

Here are three takeaways from the team’s first two games of the 2024 MLS season.

Are Austin FC Embracing Being ‘Bad?’

Anyone who’s followed Austin FC at all since the team began play in 2021 knows one thing about head coach Josh Wolff’s idealized version of soccer: it involves having the ball…lots and lots of the ball. To be clear, this strategy hasn’t always been effective (Austin FC have only had one season that could reasonably be considered ‘good’), but Austin FC had a lot of possession in their first three years of existence. The team ranked in the top ten in possession amongst all MLS teams from 2021 through 2023, each season having well over 50% of the ball in their matches (all stats per fbref.com or fotmob.com).

Through two matches in 2024, Austin FC are only averaging 47% possession (with the obvious caveat that two matches is a very, very small sample size). And if we remove the second half of the Minnesota United match – where Austin FC were desperately trying to make up a one-goal deficit – that possession percentage drops to just 42%.

Austin FC also look to be playing more direct when they do have the ball. In 2023, Wolff’s team attempted 82.7 long passes per 90 minutes. That number is up to 86.5 in 2024. Again, two matches are hardly enough to make definitive statements about a team’s broader tactical approach, but it does seem worth noting that Austin FC have looked different thus far in 2024.

Perhaps Wolff is acknowledging he doesn’t have the roster to play the pristine, possession-oriented soccer of his dreams. Maybe he’s embracing his inner Sean Dyche, prioritizing defensive solidity first, looking to hit teams quickly, and directly when the opportunities present themselves, and setting the fancy passing patterns aside. Or maybe Wolff is simply having his team play more conservatively because Sebastian Driussi is out injured. Time will tell.

Stuuuuuver is Thankfully Still Stuuuuuver

Regarding Austin FC’s solitary point of the 2024 MLS season – it’s important to celebrate the result, not the performance. For 90-plus minutes on Saturday night, the Seattle Sounders comprehensively outplayed Austin FC. Avert your eyes if you’re squeamish: Seattle outshot Austin 23 to 2 and per fbref.com, amassed 1.3 expected goals to Austin’s 0.0 (in other words, the two shots that Austin FC did take in the match were…not good).

For a team to come away with a 0-0 draw from a match where they were so clearly second-best usually means their goalkeeper did some extremely high-level goalkeeping. Thank you, Brad Stuver. Despite Seattle’s 23 shots, Stuver only had to make three saves for his clean sheet at Lumen Field, but those three interventions were critical.

Austin’s favorite goalkeeper faced .71 expected goals on target (xGOT – which measures the probability of a shot resulting in a goal and takes into account where the shot ended up). Even though Seattle opted for quantity over quality with their shooting, against most mortal goalkeepers they probably would have found the back of the net at least once.

Stuver was even better against Minnesota, where he faced 3.01 xGOT and only conceded twice. Through just two matches, Stuver has saved nearly two goals worth of chances based on where the opposition’s shots are landing. If Austin FC are going to have any chance of reaching the postseason in 2024, they will need Stuver’s goalkeeping to continue being of the ‘heroic’ variety.

Rigoni is Unfortunately Still Rigoni

Purchasing a seat in the first few rows of an Austin FC match is hazardous to one’s health. In second-half stoppage time against Seattle, an Alex Ring interception launched the Verde and Black on a rare foray into the attacking third. After Ring and substitute Owen Wolff exchanged passes, the ball fell to Emiliano Rigoni. In a sight that’s become depressingly familiar to Verde fans, the Argentinian Designated Player (DP) promptly fired off a shot from outside the box that troubled spectators far more than it troubled Seattle goalkeeper Andrew Thomas.

Starting the 2024 season with an injured Driussi is woefully suboptimal for Austin FC. Driussi’s absence would be more palatable, however, if the team’s other DP attacker could produce performances remotely resembling his roster designation. Deployed on the right wing for most of his Austin FC career, Rigoni has started and played on the left for the team’s first two matches of the season. The change of scenery hasn’t helped. Rigoni has taken two shots in 2024 and has produced just .2 expected goals (xG) and .2 expected goals assisted (xGA).

If anything, the move to the left flank has made Rigoni an even more anonymous figure in Austin FC’s matches. At least on the right he could cut inside and fire off shots from his preferred left foot. In 2023, Rigoni averaged 21.7 touches in the attacking third per 90 minutes. He’s down to just 15.5 touches per 90 in the attacking third in 2024. Underwhelming since arriving in Austin in 2022, the 2024 version of Rigoni doesn’t appear to be an upgrade.

Lo que muchos pedían desde hace meses finalmente ocurrió. Austin FC anunció este lunes la destitución del entrenador Nicolás Estévez y del director deportivo Rodolfo Borrell, poniendo fin a una era marcada por la inconsistencia, las promesas incumplidas y una gestión que dejó al equipo al borde del abismo en la tabla de la MLS.

La decisión llega después de una derrota de 2-1 en casa ante Sporting Kansas City el sábado, un equipo que ocupaba el último lugar de la Conferencia Oeste. Pero el golpe más duro había llegado el partido anterior: una paliza histórica de 5-0 ante San Diego, la peor derrota en la historia del club. Con esos antecedentes inmediatos, la salida de ambos era inevitable.

Austin FC termina esta fase de la temporada en el puesto 13 de la Conferencia Oeste, con apenas tres victorias en 14 partidos y sin posibilidades reales de clasificar a los playoffs. El timing no puede ser más simbólico: la MLS entrará en una pausa de dos meses por el Mundial 2026, lo que le da al club una ventana para reorganizarse antes de reanudar la competencia.

El propietario y fundador Anthony Precourt rompió el silencio con un comunicado que mezcla autocrítica con determinación. Precourt reconoció que los resultados no han sido aceptables y dejó claro que el club seguirá tomando las decisiones necesarias para entregar resultados competitivos. La afición y la comunidad de Austin, dijo, merecen un equipo ganador.

La figura de Borrell merece un análisis aparte. El español llegó en 2023 con un currículum deslumbrante: había sido asistente de Pep Guardiola en el Manchester City, uno de los clubes más poderosos del mundo. Se le confió la gestión del plantel con la expectativa de que su experiencia internacional elevaría el nivel del equipo. Lo que siguió fue una serie de decisiones cuestionables en el mercado de fichajes y una plantilla que nunca terminó de cuajar.

Los números hablan solos. Los dos jugadores mejor pagados del equipo esta temporada son los extremos Facundo Torres, con salario garantizado de 3.4 millones de dólares, y Myrto Uzuni, con 1.6 millones. Torres, el jugador más caro de la nómina, tiene apenas un gol en 14 partidos. Uzuni lidera al equipo con cinco. Una inversión de esa magnitud con esos retornos sobre el campo resume perfectamente el fracaso de la gestión deportiva.

De cara al inmediato, el asistente técnico Davy Arnaud asumirá como entrenador interino para el partido del sábado ante St. Louis. El club no precisó si continuará en el cargo más allá de ese encuentro.

Ahora viene la parte difícil: encontrar al entrenador y al director deportivo correctos antes de que la MLS regrese tras el Mundial. Austin FC ha clasificado a los playoffs apenas dos veces desde su fundación en 2021. Con la pausa obligatoria del torneo, el club tiene una oportunidad real de reinventarse. La pregunta es si Precourt y la directiva tendrán el criterio para no volver a cometer los mismos errores.

El Q2 Stadium estaba lleno y pintado de verde el sábado por la noche, pero la imagen falsa del sold-out no pudo disfrazar lo que ocurrió en el terreno de juego: Austin FC cayó 2-1 ante Sporting Kansas City y sumó su sexta derrota en la temporada, consolidando un registro alarmante de 3 victorias, 5 empates y 6 derrotas que tiene al equipo lejos de donde debería estar.

Lo más doloroso no fue solo el resultado, sino cómo llegó. Austin dominó en porcentaje el partido y se fue al descanso con ventaja gracias a un golazo de Mikkel Desler en el minuto 45, en la única llegada del primer tiempo. El lateral Desler conectó de primera un centro de Guilherme Biro para marcar su segundo gol en la MLS y darle al Verde y Negro una ventaja que parecía encaminar el partido hacia los tres puntos.

Pero el segundo tiempo contó otra historia. Los DP’s de Austin, Torres y Uzuni, inoperantes. Sporting KC salió con determinación y se lanzó sobre el arco de Brad Stuver con una intensidad que Austin no supo igualar. Shapi Suleymanov tuvo disparos peligrosos en los minutos 67 y 72, ambos detenidos por Stuver. Dejan Joveljic también probó suerte en el 69, pero el portero verde respondió. Sin embargo, la presión constante de Kansas City terminó rindiendo frutos.

En el minuto 79, Manu García entró al área y remató con potencia un voleo que no le dejó opción a Stuver. El empate llegó como balde de agua fría para un Q2 Stadium que aún creía. Y apenas unos minutos después, en el 75, el técnico Rapha Wicky había mandado al campo a Stepen Afrifa en sustitución de Taylor Calheira. El delantero no tardó en justificar el cambio: agarró mal parado a su defensor y definió para el 2-1 definitivo, su primer gol de la temporada.

Dato revelador: Sporting KC superó a Austin 21 a 7 en disparos totales, con nueve al arco frente a apenas tres del local. Un equipo que juega de local ante su propia afición y genera tres remates al arco no puede aspirar a ganar. Eso, en cualquier idioma futbolístico, se llama crisis.

Y la crisis tiene nombre y apellido: Rodolfo Borrell

Por su parte, el técnico español no encuentra la fórmula, y los números lo gritan. Austin FC acumula seis derrotas en lo que va del torneo, con apenas tres victorias. El patrón de colapsos en el segundo tiempo no es nuevo, tampoco lo es la incapacidad del equipo para sostener resultados favorables. Esta derrota ante un Sporting KC que hace una semana era goleado 6-0 por Portland.

El Verde y Negro es un equipo que no demuestra talento. Tiene estadio hermosos y tiene afición fiel. Lo que no tiene, por ahora, es un rumbo claro bajo la conducción de Estévez.

El Austin FC sufrió una derrota por 5-0 ante el San Diego FC el miércoles por la noche en el Snapdragon Stadium.

San Diego estableció una ventaja temprana con goles en los minutos 8 y 17. El equipo “Verde y Negro” tuvo sus propias oportunidades en la primera mitad, pero no logró concretar un remate de Facundo Torres ni un centro de CJ Fodrey que pasó rozando a Myrto Uzuni.
