Ex-Seattle Sounder rescues a point for Austin FC in Portland
It was an easy celebration to mock.
In his 18th MLS match, Emiliano Rigoni had finally – finally – found the back of the net just before half-time last Saturday against the San Jose Earthquakes. Only Beavis and Butt-Head have had more trouble scoring than the much-maligned Argentinian Designated Player.
Relief, excitement, pure, uncut jubilation – these were the emotions Austin FC fans likely thought Rigoni would express when they fancifully dreamed of him scoring his first goal in Verde and Black. Rigoni had other ideas.
With his palms upturned and his lips curling into a self-satisfied smirk, Rigoni (reminder: he of one goal in 18 MLS matches) stared into the supporters’ section at Q2 Stadium with a look that boldly seemed to ask: “How do you like me now?” Say what you will about his goal-scoring abilities, but Rigoni possesses the confidence of a thousand Tony Robbins books.
Rigoni didn’t make fans wait long for his next contribution to an Austin FC goal. One week after notching his first MLS goal, Rigoni recorded his first MLS assist courtesy of a delightful cross to Jon Gallagher in Austin FC’s 2-2 draw away to the Portland Timbers on Saturday night. The result, like Rigoni’s goal celebration against San Jose, will have those of a Verde persuasion happy but a bit exasperated.
Austin FC supporters certainly weren’t happy to begin the evening. When the lineups were released there was one glaring omission: Sebastian Driussi. The team’s talisman wasn’t even listed on the bench. Speculation was rampant that Driussi was likely sitting this match out as a precautionary measure. Austin FC have a lot of matches coming up, and the artificial turf at Providence Park is notoriously unkind to those who dare try and play soccer on it. You wouldn’t drive a BMW on a bumpy backroad full of potholes and debris, would you?
Driussi missing a match for precautionary reasons is palatable. But Driussi missing a match due to injury is downright terrifying for a team that had netted only eight goals through nine matches heading into the Portland contest. Unfortunately, a team that has struggled to score goals with last season’s runner-up in MVP voting will have to figure out how to score goals without him. Per The Striker’s Phil West, it was confirmed by Josh Wolff in the press conference after the Timbers’ match that Driussi has a groin issue. Wolff was vague on how long he’ll be out.
It’s obviously the smallest of sample sizes, but Austin FC’s attack functioned just fine in Portland without Driussi. After going nearly 400 minutes without a goal, for the second straight match, Austin FC scored twice. Verde fans had to wait a while for that second goal to arrive against the Timbers, however.
Portland center-back Dario Zuparic opened the night’s scoring with his first-ever MLS goal in the 33rd minute. Gallagher’s goal tied the match in the 59th minute, but it appeared Timbers’ left-back Claudio Bravo would condemn Austin FC to another defeat in the Rose City when he scored a daisy-cutter from outside the box (his first-ever MLS goal) a little over ten minutes later. Just as the referee was feeling for his whistle to blow for full-time, an old Timbers’ nemesis rescued a point for the Verde and Black.
Ex-Seattle Sounder Will Bruin was able to place his forehead on a serenely floated Owen Wolff cross to give Austin FC a late, late equalizing goal in stoppage time. The result is Austin FC’s seventh-straight league match without a win and the team currently sits in 12th place in the Western Conference, but Wolff’s grin at the match’s conclusion suggests there are positives to take from the team’s trip to the Pacific Northwest.
Minus Driussi, Austin FC deployed a 3-4-3 formation against Portland. Wingbacks Gallagher and Adam Lundqvist positioned themselves aggressively when Austin FC were in possession and gave the team a menacing width it has been lacking for much of the season.
Via WhoScored.com, Austin FC’s team touch map shows the Verde and Black had no trouble getting on the ball in wide areas – particularly down Gallagher’s right wing – on Saturday night.
Compared to the team’s touch map from their last away trip against the Los Angeles Galaxy, Austin FC had much more success stretching their opponents in Portland (notice the lack of touches out wide near the end line – a dangerous area to deliver crosses and cutbacks from – versus the Galaxy).
The width generated by the wingbacks allowed wingers Rigoni and Rodney Redes to operate tucked inside closer to striker Gyasi Zardes. Austin FC’s big offseason acquisition failed to make an impression against the Timbers (with Bruin’s goal, Zardes is now the only Austin FC striker yet to score this season), but Rigoni and Redes looked comfortable playing narrower.
Austin FC’s expected goals total of 1.4 was their fourth-highest total in a match this season, per fbref.com. The formation switch also helped out at the other end of the field. Playing with an extra center-back, Austin FC allowed just .8 expected goals against the Timbers, the second-fewest they’ve allowed in the league in 2023. Whether Austin FC will persist with this formation is unclear, but with Plan A misfiring for much of the year, the team can take comfort in knowing they have a viable Plan B.

Ambos equipos llegaban con rachas positivas, y aunque ninguno logró romper el cero en el marcador, el resultado permite a los de Austin mantener su buen momento en la temporada 2025 de la MLS. Las escasez en la ofensiva que tienen los Verdes, parece no importarle a Nico Estévez, quien se mostró tranquilo, en la conferencia de prensa incluso mencionando que la prensa presente parece menospreciar a los rivales.
Con este empate, Austin FC alcanza los 13 puntos y extiende su racha invicta a cuatro partidos consecutivos. Brad Stuver, portero titular del equipo, fue figura clave al realizar cinco atajadas que impidieron que los Timbers se llevaran la victoria. Por su parte, el arquero de Portland, James Pantemis, también tuvo una actuación sólida y logró su tercera portería imbatida de la temporada. Por otro lado, Osman Bukari sigue siendo un fantasma, con algunos pases durante los primeros minutos del partido, fueron suficientes para justificar la mediocre actuación de un jugador que costó 10 millones de dólares traerlo y que sus números no alcanzan a algunos de sus compañeros que llegaron por mucho menos dinero y sueldo.
Brandon Vazquez dio su mejor partido ante San Diego, ese juego en el que no tuvo a Bukari, ni a Uzuni en el campo de inicio. Ese partido en el qué Austin mostró espectacularidad con tan solo 28% de dominio, quedó en el olvido con el regreso de los DP’s que por obras razones están en el campo. Por su parte Myrto Uzuni, hoy el más peligroso, al tener que salir de su zona para no chocar con su compañero como ha pasado en varias ocasiones, se convierte en un jugador que no pesa.
Desde el arranque del encuentro, el conjunto dirigido por Josh Wolff buscó imponer condiciones. En los primeros 10 minutos, Austin generó dos oportunidades claras de gol, mostrando una postura ofensiva que ha caracterizado al equipo durante las últimas jornadas. Una de las jugadas más peligrosas del primer tiempo llegó al minuto 25, cuando un error en la salida de Portland generó una chance para Austin cerca del área, pero fue frustrada por una barrida oportuna del defensor David Ayala.
A pesar del control del balón y de mantener la iniciativa, Austin no logró concretar sus oportunidades en el último tercio del campo. Portland, que había llegado al Q2 Stadium como uno de los equipos en mejor forma, planteó un esquema ordenado y paciente, priorizando la solidez defensiva.
El equipo visitante apenas logró su primer disparo al minuto 33 con un remate desde la banda izquierda por parte de David Da Costa. Más adelante, Felipe Mora estuvo cerca de marcar con un disparo a quemarropa, pero Stuver estuvo atento para desviar el balón antes del descanso.
La segunda mitad arrancó con más intensidad por parte de los Timbers, que estuvieron muy cerca de abrir el marcador en una doble ocasión. Stuver volvió a aparecer en momentos clave, primero deteniendo un disparo de Santiago Moreno y luego otro intento de Juan Mosquera, ambos dentro del área chica. Austin respondió con más posesión y movilidad en ataque, pero sin lograr inquietar con claridad a Pantemis, que se lució con una gran atajada a mano izquierda tras un cabezazo de Brandon Vázquez.

Este empate sin goles refleja el planteamiento táctico de ambos equipos, que priorizaron el orden defensivo ante el riesgo. Austin FC mostró madurez al saber manejar el partido, evitando errores y defendiendo con solvencia ante un rival peligroso.
El punto sumado refuerza la confianza del equipo verde y negro, que se mantiene en la parte alta de la Conferencia Oeste. Con una racha invicta que sigue creciendo, Austin buscará seguir sumando en su próximo compromiso y seguir adaptándose como un equipo que no tiene un jugador que genere futbol, la falta de un 10 por la mala planeación del Director Deportivo Rodolfo Borrell, sin duda la veremos por el resto del año a menos que pase un milagro.

Hines-Ike y Uzuni se ganaron un lugar en el Equipo del Día
Ambos jugadores obtuvieron su primer reconocimiento al Equipo de la Jornada de 2025
El defensa del Austin FC, Brendan Hines-Ike, y el delantero Myrto Uzuni fueron elegidos para el Equipo de la Jornada de la Major League Soccer (MLS) por su participación en la victoria a domicilio por 1-0 sobre el St. Louis City SC el domingo en el Energizer Park.
Ambos jugadores obtuvieron su primer reconocimiento al Equipo de la Jornada de 2025.
Hines-Ike lució el brazalete de capitán y jugó los 90 minutos de la victoria por blanqueada. Despejó 12 balones y ganó sus siete (7) duelos, ayudando al equipo a mantener su portería a cero por tercera vez en la temporada.
Uzuni anotó el gol de la victoria al rematar con maestría un centro raso de Osman Bukari en el minuto 33, abriendo su cuenta con el Austin FC. El internacional albanés también creó dos ocasiones y completó sus 14 pases.

El Austin FC venció 1-0 al St. Louis City SC el domingo por la tarde en el Energizer Park, marcando su tercera victoria consecutiva y su tercera portería a cero de la temporada para el equipo VERDE & Black. Austin ahora ocupa el segundo lugar en la Conferencia Oeste de la MLS tras seis (6) partidos.
El único gol del partido llegó al final de la primera mitad, y fue el Jugador Franquicia Myrto Uzuni quien abrió el marcador con el Club. Osman Bukari creó la ocasión al superar brillantemente a su defensor dentro del área y encontrar a Uzuni, quien remató a bocajarro en el minuto 33. Austin siguió presionando con un disparo de Brandon Vázquez que casi duplicó la ventaja. Austin terminó la primera parte dominando en posesión, disparos y disparos a portería.
St. Louis buscó el empate en la segunda mitad, con una atajada crucial de Brad Stuver en el minuto 53. El VERDE & Black siguió presionando y casi anotó otro gol cuando Bukari remató un centro de Owen Wolff, pero fue anulado por fuera de juego.
